This is a lovely Selmer 9. Full Boehm Bb clarinet. Serial number T1202, manufactured in 1963. The Selmer Series 9 clarinets preceded this Selmer 9-Star. And the Series 9 (1960's) clarinets replaced the 'Centered Tone' model. Selmer Wood Clarinet Serial Numbers K Model. The first Selmer clarinets were made in 1890. Selmer assigned serial numbers to all kinds of instruments as they were made, and only a few hundred of them were 10G clarinets.

Stamped on bottom joint and bell: [music lyre] / H. SELMER / Á / PARIS (in oval cartouche) / HS (monogram). Serial number 5345. Full-Boehm model 20. Grenadilla body; German-silver keys, rings, ferrules. Full-Boehm system. 20 keys, 7 rings, rod/pillar mounts. Includes articulated c-sharp¹/g-sharp², forked e-flat¹/b-flat², alternative a-flat/e-flat² key, extended low range to written e-flat. Barrel: ebonite, lined with metal, with screw-type tuning device on upper socket (lower socket not metal-lined). Thumbrest: tilted slightly to upper right to accommodate thumb contour. Total length (top of barrel to bottom of bell): 634.0 mm. Part of a set with NMM 6194. Gift of Alan Bates, Hockessin, Delaware, 1998.

Nov. 8th, 2006 -
Just had someone drop off their Buffet R-13 for repair. He tried playing the 10-G and here are some of the things that he said:
'..more 'open'..' sounding than his R-13
'..a very fluid sound..' '..very nice sound..very nice action..', '..it sits well under the fingers..'
'..with a repad would be superb ..'
At this price it would be perfect for a high school student wanting to move up to an instrument that would take them into college.

Status of this particular instrument:

• Manufactured in 1972
• This clarinet comes with the original mouthpiece and case.
• This clarinet needs to be regulated and repadded. There was a leak in the low end so the four low pads were replaced and it now plays its entire range. This was done so folks could play test this clarinet to hear its remarkable tone. All the pictures were taken prior to the four new pads except the last two pictures which show the new pads. It can still use other pads replaced and the action needs regulation to bring out its best.
• There is tarnish on the silver-plated keys that would benefit from polishing.
• There is a small chip in the bottom tenon of the lower section (which inserts into the bell). It can be filled by an experienced repair technician. There are two pictures of the chip below. Otherwise, this solid Grenadilla wood instrument is in excellent structural shape.

An instrument such as this is worthy of being refurbished.

Selmer 100 Clarinet Serial Numbers

As Principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the late Anthony Gigliotti was one of the country's most famous and influential clarinetists. His collaboration with Selmer Paris led to the development of the Selmer Series 10G. In creating the 10G, Selmer aimed to improve upon the design of Buffet's R13. Gigliotti used to play R13s that he had modified to his specifications by Hans Moennig; Gigliotti believed that these design changes produced a clarinet with better intonation and more evenness throughout the registers. The design of the 10G was based on the modifications that Hans Moennig made to Gigliotti's R13s. The 10G retains the wonderful qualities of the R13 but also met Gigliottis's goals, allowing players to be 'more versatile -flexible in dynamics, able to meet the demands for a broad range of tone, precise in tuning, and able to play stronger fortissimos without losing musical quality'.

First was the Selmer 'Balanced Tone' (1940's) and 'Centered Tone' (1950's) clarinets. These preceeded the Selmer Series 9 and are large bore clarinets.

The Series 9 (1960's) replaced the 'Centered Tone' model. Up through the Selmer 9, the Selmer philosophy was to use a large diameter tone hole with no undercutting (straight sided tone holes; and an almost purely cylindrical bore. The larger tone holes do produce a more robust tone, but the twelfths are 'short' and tend to be very sharp in the fundamental when playing pianissimo.

The Selmer 9* was next and was a move toward reducing tone hole diameters in some areas and introducing undercutting. Undercut tone holes, offer a more flexible tone (perhaps a bit more free blowing).

The Selmer Series 10 was a radical move toward a polycylindrical design.

The great innovation by Robert Carre (Buffet) in the 1950's was the use of a polycylindrical bore design and smaller, but undercut tone holes. The reduction of the bore size in the lower 2/3 of the upper joint greatly improves the twelfths in that area.

The Selmer 10G was the result of work with Anthony Gigliotti and a move even closer to the Buffet design.

The 10G is the Hans Moennig modification of the R-13, and plays similarly to the R-13 although the tone tends to be brighter than the R-13. Hans Moennig (repairman from Philadelphia in the 1950's and 1960's) redesigned the R-13 on his own by eliminating the choke in the bell and increasing the choke at the bottom of the barrel.
The measurement at the bottom of the Moennig barrel is about 0.010' smaller than the top as compared to the standard 0.004'. The Selmer 10-G basically copied the Hans Moennig design into a Selmer clarinet. The only significant difference is the shape of the barrel and some of the undercutting of the tone holes. The straighter .574' bore offers a rich, robust sound capable of projection.
[added later] I recently had the opportunity to work on a Buffet S-1 Clarinet. I read that it is the same as the R-13 with the exception that it has a 'inverse taper' barrel for a slightly brighter sound.
Wikipedia says: 'S1 - another alternative model to the R13, manufactured in the 1970s and early 80s. Designed to have a more 'traditional' bore than the post-1950s R13.'

Benny Goodman played a Selmer 10G with a Woodwind G9 mouthpiece and Vandoren 1-1/2 reeds.
Note: This may be apocryphal. That's right, I said 'apocryphal'.

June 4, 2007 - Finished repadding, recorking this clarinet. I polished the silver-plated keys a little. I cleaned the body and applied bore oil.
